Country: Scotland
Region: Islands – Jura
Distillery: Jura
Type: Single Malt
Flavor: Peated
Notes: What’s that I hear? Another dram! This pour is Jura’s The Sound, which is from their travel retail line. This is an interesting dram for someone like me, who grew up around orange groves and fresh citrus nearly year round. At first whiff, it’s peaty with a touch of the scent you get when you gently squeeze a fresh orange and get the spray in your nose. It’s a little sweet and a little bitter. On the tongue, I get cinnamon, citrus, smoke, and oak. Going down, it reminds me of an American bourbon. The finish is a combination of orange rind and preserved orange peel, a bit like the smell with the bitter and sweet combination, but heavier and with more oil (which is where the peel comes in). I taste much more influence from the bourbon casks than I do in many whiskies, but there’s a sweetness, too from the Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. All in all, it’s like the life cycle of an orange rind, strong and complex, yet pleasant.
